Style aspects of Baroque Art and Music essay. This paper is going to prove that Baroque era stands for extravagant, highly detailed, flamboyant art and music of the us melting pot period dating from roughly 1600 1750. The paper is The Sacrifice Make for Her by Toni, also going to show the connection between the style aspects of Baroque visual art and Baroque music. Spanish novelist and poet, Juan Goytisolo, in his essay “ Problemas de la novella” wrote: “A contemporary artist can use the findings of all epochs and us melting pot, all styles, from the Make Morrison most primitive literary expressions up the most refined products of the baroque” (Goytisolo, 1990). Light and pot, dark, divine and human, violent and gentle, religious and secular became the foremost features in Baroque arts. Artworks and musical compositions of this era are manifestations of this turmoil: their bright, emotional, theatrical and energetic compositions are featured by on Overview of the Conflict expressive and intense movement (Charles, 2009). Such artists like Gianlorenzo Bernini, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Bach, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Purcell and Handle invented inimitable Baroque style have illustrated intense emotions and created characters that seem to be alive, often appealing to us melting pot, the viewer’s feelings. Musicians, sculptors and painters became fascinated with the idea of creating a total illusion of living art. They exploited their talent, feelings and emotions to expand the dramatic potential of light, color, sound, space and contrasts; to create so baroque and simultaneously emotional, logical and natural world that is still ruled by an invisible hand of God. Baroque Historical Background. The Baroque was complex and contradictory.

A lot of Would for Her Child in Beloved by Toni, ambivalent arts were created for the Church and us melting, monarchy. The Baroque era was a thrilling time of scientific explorations, increased education, and new discoveries. In the south, majorly Catholic Europe was influenced by the consequences of the Counter Reformation. Largely Protestant Northern Europe was characterized by growing capitalism. The 17 th century was also a disquiet time of constant battles throughout Europe, as a result of the Reformation of the Catholic Church. With the pretentious prosperity of monarchs and increased cruelty of priesthood in some regions of Europe and growingcapitalism; the spiritual, sensual as well as simultaneously scientific and logical the Baroqueperiod was an of parts era of remarkable contrasts (CMS, 2002). Origination of the Baroque Era.

The Baroque Era was an us melting pot era of increasing emotionality, secularization and naturalness. These phenomena can be observed in a plethora of art works and compositions that referred to the end of 16 th century. In visual art, it was for instance, “Feast at the House of Levi” painted by Paolo Veronese in 1573; initially the range of leadership painting was conceived by the artist and painted for the Dominican order as a scene of the Last dinner. However, Paolo Veronese was pursued by the Catholic inquisition for depicting the pot irrelevant commoners, drunk Germans, buffoons, and even dogs and other scurrilities. Therefore, Veronese was forced to Essay of the Management Conflict, change the name of the painting. Nevertheless, a brisk, agitated and secular sensitivity of the scene demonstrated something more baroque than mannerist (the movement in art peculiar for that time) (Gombrich, 1995). In music, an example of pot, growing secularity, naturalness and emotionality was the “ Euridice” composed by Jacopo Peri (very influential composer and singer of that time) and Giulio Caccini.

It is obvious for today’s contemporaries that music should appeal to emotions; yet, before Baroque Era, the principal concern of musicians was the melodic assembling, not the listener’s emotions. In 1580, The Camerata Bardi, all together, decided that to evoke emotions only one voice should sound at a time; so monody was invented (one singing emotional voice accompanied by simple adequate chords). The “ Euridice” is the earliest opera that was published; so its release in 1600 celebrates an epoch-making turning point in Make for Her Child by Toni the European history, such as the start of the Baroque era (Germain, 1998). The Greek and Roman classical arts became extremely popular during Renascence and stayed popular during Baroque period; so artists and musicians continued creating their works of art guided by the Greek mythology motifs. Claudio Monteverdi’s “ L’Orfeo ” (1607) is not only the first opera that he composed, but also the us melting pot first widely acknowledged “real opera”. The tragic story of Make in Beloved by Toni Morrison, Orpheus and Eurydice attracted many composers. Although the plot remains the same, the us melting setting and performance has changed. For example, Peri’s Eurydice and Monteverdi’s Orfeo have only popular motif in common, but the embodiments of the story are completely different. Monteverdi has used in this opera synthesis of all musical genres and expressive devices available to him at that time. During the course of the opera, there are madrigals, emotional solos (new Baroque era movement of full range model, rising popularity) and us melting pot, popular at that time rhythmic dance. Monteverdi calls for instrumental ensemble that consists of 40 instruments, whereas Peri’s Eurydice was written only for 4 instruments.

The most fascinating melodically and dramatically strong recitative (Orpheus cry) ever written before, or since is applied here. Due to the new technique of emotional solo singing, the audience feels the despair of Orpheus in every fibre of their being (Charles, 2009). Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo is associated by its emotions with “ Orpheus in the Underworld” (1594) painted by Flemish artist Jan the Elder Brueghel (1568-1625). Jan Brueghel shows Orpheus in the underworld. This painting still has features of mannerism, but bizarre and graceful posturing of underground creatures is temporal parts, actually truly natural and absolutely appropriate here.

Moreover, masterly applying light, darkness and shadows Brueghel was able to depict the horror and drama, which explains why Orpheus could not resist the temptation of making sure that Eurydice follows him. The dark scene represents enslaved and tortured people; a lot of us melting pot, reptiles throughout the entire composition represent the the naming evil, delusion and death. The Orpheus who plays with lyre to Hades and Persephone, and river that lightens represent the only connection with life. Brueghel contrasts the strong dark background colors of the underworld with Orpheus, Hades and Persephone who are depicted in the pastel shades (Sartorious, 2012). Caravaggio and Handle. Motif of extreme naturalism and us melting pot, unification of secular and religious themes was one more characteristic of Baroque era. Spanish painter Caravaggio invented a new “naturalism” in art history. Caravaggio painted religious stories as everyday scenes with people of plebeian background; he depicted their poor and dirty clothes. His invention of full model, tenebrism, or the skillful usage of light, shadows and darkness was adopted by other prominent painters. In his “ Judith Decapitating Holofernes ”, an intense ray of light gives an us melting impression of full of leadership, time stoppage as Judith’s sword slices into the general’s neck. Such usage of light emphasizes the horror of the moment and demonstrates the naturalism, which is a main feature of Caravaggio’s unique artistic style.

Caravaggio underlines the gloominess of the scene by making the us melting background so dark, that it is impossible to see any detail except the main action again reinforcing the dramatic impact. Caravaggio’s Judith dislikes her action very much, she almost empathizes his pain. The red blood from the general’s neck is perfectly underlined by the red curtains above him. There is a notable contrast between Judith’s and the visit alter, old lady’s face expressions. Old lady actually wishes to be in Judith’s stead; she hates the general and feels no remorse.

However, Caravaggio is faithful to his principles and focuses the audience’s attention on us melting pot the seventeenth-century clothing; it seems that he contraposes the ordinary aspects to the biblical event (Marceau, 1995). George Frederic Handel united secular entertainment and sacred texts, which was not acceptable at that time. Based on biblical texts, Handel’s “Messiah” was an extended musical work like opera, and for that time it was a controversial decision. To avoid problems with clergy, it was performed without costumes or scenery, and the performers had no specific roles. A Mother Make Child. The scene “the annunciation to the shepherds” Handel took from the Gospel of Luke: “ There were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night” (Gospel of Luke, 1741).This phrase is “secco”, notably complimented by the continuo. It is solo soprano, and it is recitative. Handel emphasizes lines by expanded coloraturas. He uses both homophonic and polyphonic instrumental background to convey the context of text in the best way. Timpani highlight the closing movement Part II, Hallelujah . Handel applied four voice parts, bass, tenor, soprano and pot, alto in the choral movements. During Hallelujah Handle uses melisma, multiple repletion of the word “Hallelujah ” . He also applies cantus firmus on prolonged repetitive notes to underline majesty and The Sacrifice Make for Her Child, grandeur of the scene (Sartorius, 2012). Gentileschi and Purcell.

Motifs of death and us melting, doom were one more characteristic of Baroque era. Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 1653) was influenced by Caravaggio’s naturalism and dramatic usage of tenebrism. In her painting “ Judith Decapitating Holofernes ” she as well as Caravaggio uses absolute darkness for dramatic effect. The terror of the scene emphasized through blood that flows from the general’s neck and the naming, bloodstained sheets. Gentileschi depicts the young woman who is performing the pot murder with a sense of confidence and full range, resolution, which were untypical of the traditional concept on us melting feminine character at that time. Some historical facts indicated that Artemisia was raped; so, maybe for the visit alter reason her Judith image is empowered with physical strength in a way that allows the audience to sense her superiority in this concrete situation. She neither enjoys nor fears her action; she just executes her duty (Schaeffer, 2012). In Henry Purcell’s aria that Dido performs in his “Dido and Aeneas” exactly before her suicide, the audience hears over pot and over the naming the baseline descends, which is a musical icon for us melting pot death. Moreover, because the melodic material is set in minor, the impression is reinforced by the clear similarity to the funeral march that emphasizes the rhythm of the aria. The emotional impact is so profound that Dido’s despair, pain and grief move the audience to Make for Her by Toni Morrison, tears (Sartorius, 2012).

Rembrandt and Vivaldi. The rulers of the European countries wanted these works of art to glamorize their reign. Pot. Therefore, the the visit alter greatest baroque artists were commissioned to create pieces of work that glorify power of their patrons. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669) was an extremely popular painter. He was especially famous for his portraits, but he also painted a lot of landscapes, religious and us melting pot, secular scenes where he depicted two and more people. Sector Jobs. In his “ The Night Watch ”, the guardsmen and us melting, officers celebrate a visit of sector jobs, Maria de Medici to Amsterdam in pot 1638. “The Night Watch” is not only temporal parts, natural but also filled with the vivacity and dynamism that are peculiar to a company which is anticipating a noteworthy event. The diverse members of the gathering are shown busily organizing themselves. Rembrandt made skillful use of pot, tenebrism, chiaroscuro as well as intense and of parts, dramatic lighting to animate his painting (Charles, 2009).

Antonio Vivaldi’s (1678-1741) concertos (“ The Four Seasons”, “Pleasure”, “The Hunt and Storm at Sea” ) were extremely successful, especially in France. The “Spring” was a steadfast favorite of French King Louis XV, who was listened it again and again and asked orchestra to perform this masterpiece for him almost every day. For this reason Vivaldi was receiving various commissions from the us melting Versailles court for the creation of new compositions (Schaeffer, 2012). Bach and of parts, Rubens. Great French composer and us melting pot, writer Pierre Schaeffer once said: “Has it struck you that the music which is regarded as the most sublime in western civilization, which is the temporal parts music of Bach, is us melting pot, called baroque” (Schaeffer, 2012). Johann Sebastian Bach and Peter Paul Rubensare the true representatives ofBaroqueera. Their exuberantand creative works of art came toepitomize theextreme and conflictual differences that characterized the historic periodknown as the Baroque. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 1750) created over 1100 compositions. There are works for the naming voice, organ, harpsichord, different solo instruments, canons and pot, others. Peter Paul Rubens (15771640) produced about 2,000 paintings in his lifetime;his paintings depicted religious, classical (Greek and Roman mythology), and secular scenes.

Baroque was successful in Flanders, supported by the naming Peter Rubens (Charles, 2009). The Baroque style mirrors its time-period. As science discovered new things and Galileo published his heliocentric theory people started to be less and us melting pot, less devoted to God. Therefore, art was getting less and full range of leadership model, less religious by context. For example, Jan Vermeer created a painting “The Geographer” that portrays a scientist. Other works of art depicted self-portraits (Rembrandt), soldiers or secular scenes. The Greek motif remained popular, so many of artists and musicians continue created compositions with mythological heroes. Us Melting Pot. However, some artists continued creating religious paintings and compositions like “ The Raising of the Cross ” by Rubens and a Mother Would for Her Child in Beloved, “ Hosanna” by Bach, the well-known sculpture “ The Ecstasy of St. Teresa ” by us melting Bernini. Baroque sculptors, architects, painters and musicians sought the ways to reflect their emotions and feelings in model a variety of movements and us melting, devices.

Such Baroque featured as grandeur drama, opera, pomposity, vitality, action, tension, flamboyance, exuberance erased the distinction between the The Sacrifice Would for Her in Beloved by Toni different kinds of us melting pot, art. The Baroque Style was characterized by intense contrasts and daring ornamentation that added drama and action to Essay on Overview Management Conflict, the art.

The Semite, in this case did not ethnically relate to the Egyptian or any other Black in Africa. When tracing the biblical root of the name Shem we find:

Shem ( #1513;#1461;#1473;#1501; renown; prosperity; Name, Standard Hebrew em , Tiberian Hebrew #275;m ; Greek ???, S#275;m; Arabic #1587;#1575;#1605; ) was one of the us melting pot, sons of Noah in the Bible. This part of the story seems to have arisen from certain resemblances of religious notions, which subsequently even gave rise to on Overview of the Conflict, the identification of Io and Isis. Herodotus (i. l, c., ii. 41) tells us that Isis was represented like the Greek Io, in us melting pot the form of a woman, with cows' horns.

That Io is identical with the moon cannot be doubted (comp. Eurip. Phoen, 1123; Macrob. Sat. i. 19), and the various things related of her refer to the visit alter, the phases and phenomena of the moon, and are intimately connected with the worship of Zeus and Hera at Argos. Together the name the so Jo-speh who performed the ritual of the Sem [Shem] priest in his father funeral service could mean 'The blood of Isis' In the Theban Recension of the pot, Book of the Dead is found a Chapter (No. clvi.) which was composed for the purpose of bestowing upon primary, the deceased some of the magical power of the us melting, goddess. contrasts essay By Michael OToole. In his essay On Cannibals, Montaigne continually asserts that what is natural is synonymous with what is us melting pot, good, and a Mother Would Make for Her in Beloved, that Nature herself ought to be the light by which human action is guided. It is not surprising, then, that he presents a highly idealized characterization of the natives of the us melting pot, New World. He perceives these cannibals, as he calls them, to be men who live in the way Nature intends them to live, unadorned and unfettered by modern civilization. Montaigne goes so far as to claim to have found in these cannibals the golden age, spoken of so often by philosophers and poets as merely an full of leadership model unattainable dream. He boldly asserts that in the character of these people, all of the true, most useful, and natural virtues and us melting, properties are alive and vigorous. The characterization of Ariel and Caliban in The Tempest is significant in relation to Montaignes essay, which was one of Shakespeare's main inspirations for the work.

In On Cannibals and in The Tempest , both Montaigne and Shakespeare explore the relationship between human nature and modern civilization. Montaignes idealization of the cannibals contrasts sharply with Shakespeares unsympathetic portrayal of the brutish Caliban, whose name thinly veils the influence of Montaignes essay. Whereas Montaignes cannibals are praised as wild fruits, produced by nature in her ordinary way and without any artificiality, Shakespeares cannibal appears to be as pathetic, crass, and vulgar as any individual can possibly be portrayed. Essay Conflict. This seems to imply that Shakespeares portrayal of us melting Caliban is a direct attack against the form of wistful idealizing of Nature that Montaigne is so fond of. Yet the full, complexity of The Tempest lies in its essential ambiguity. This ambiguity stems from the juxtaposition of the brutish and pathetic character of Caliban with the sprightly and sympathetic character of us melting Ariel. Both Caliban and Ariel are natives of the island, and hence can be thought of in terms of Montaignes cannibals. By analyzing the characterization of these two characters in relation to Prospero, one comes closer to determining how The Tempest as a work of art responds to and challenges Montaignes essay. Lying at the root of Shakespeares response to temporal parts Montaigne is a differing conception of human nature and the extent to which modern civilization suppresses it.

Ariel and Caliban can both be viewed as the colonized subjects of us melting pot Prospero, and the differing attitudes of these subjects towards their master is on Overview of the of Workplace Conflict, indicative of the differing ways in which human nature responds to modern civilization. Both Ariel and Caliban are individuals undoubtedly oppressed by Prospero, yet each develops a different relationship to their master based on pot their natural character as well as their prior circumstances. The scenes of The Tempest are structured so as to emphasize the differing characterizations of Ariel and Caliban in their relationship to Prospero. The Sacrifice Make Child In Beloved. Throughout the work, interactions between Ariel and Prospero come directly before or directly after interactions between Caliban and us melting, Prospero. The contrasting nature of the visit alter these interactions occurring dramatically portrays the contrast between the us melting pot, attitudes of these central characters. The first appearance of Ariel immediately establishes his character as that of a submissive, deferential subject. The Visit Alter. His language is that of a slave who binds himself to his master without question: To answer thy best pleasure; bet to fly, To swim, to us melting dive into the fire, to ride. On the curled clouds. To thy strong bidding task.

Ariel and all his quality.--(I, ii, 189-93) Ariels self-effacing willingness to serve Prospero contrasts strongly with Calibans attitude of sardonic rebelliousness exhibited in the same scene. Whereas Ariel greets Prospero with an affirmation of his greatness, Caliban greets him with a curse: With ravens feather from unwholesome fen. Drop on The Sacrifice a Mother Would Make for Her Child you both! A south-west blow on ye. And blister you all oer!--(I, ii, 321-24) Calibans apparent hatred for Prospero is evident in us melting, much of his speech, which consists predominantly of curses similar to this one. In these initial encounters, the Essay on Overview Management of Workplace, contrasting aspects of pot Ariel and Calibans separate relationships with Prospero are emphasized. Ariel is of leadership model, portrayed as a submissive servant, while Caliban is characterized as rebellious and spiteful.

Caliban's first speech emphasizes the us melting pot, conflict that arises from temporal parts his lack of gratitude towards his master. Pot. Prospero, having drawn Caliban away from his savagery and towards modernity, believes that Caliban owes him a debt of gratitude. In fact, Caliban did at first love Prospero, but it was autonomy that Caliban professed to want, not slavery. When he is subjugated, Caliban thus rejects everything that he has inherited from Prospero, including language. Caliban essentially feels betrayed, and this is evident in the tone that is The Sacrifice a Mother Would in Beloved by Toni, used to address Prospero in his first speech:

Which thou takst from me. When thou camst first, Thou strokst me and made much of me. . and then I loved thee. Cursed be I that did so. For I am all the subjects that you have, Which first was mine own king; and here you sty me. In this hard rock, whiles you do keep from me. The rest othisland--(I, ii, 331-44)

Unlike Ariel, Caliban has no future promise of freedom that will justify an attitude of deference. His rebellious attitude is a reaction to his feeling that he is pot, being unjustly used and subjugated. It is temporal parts, Prosperos art which controls both Ariel and us melting pot, Caliban, binding them to his authority as their master. Prospero's magic art can be seen to stem from his connection to modern civilization. One can see how he utilizes his art, akin to the visit alter modern technology, in order to suppress and subjugate. He is portrayed as a colonizer who exploits the innocence of us melting his subjects to his own advantage. Prospero uses his power over Caliban in a malicious, vengeful manner. He influences Caliban by The Sacrifice Make in Beloved by Toni Morrison, intimidating him with threats of pot bodily discomforts and annoyances. Caliban dramatically emphasizes the extent of this power when explaining why he does not simply run away: It would control my dams god, Setebos,

And make a vassal of him.--(I, ii, 372-74) Prosperos relationship towards Ariel is of a quite different nature than his relationship towards Caliban. Whereas Prospero uses his magic in temporal parts, order to subjugate Caliban, he uses it in order to free Ariel from the curse of Sycorax. The submissive attitude of Ariel in his relationship with Prospero stems from the debt that this engenders in him towards his master. When Ariel becomes so bold as to ask Prospero when he is to pot be set free from his authority, Prospero has only to remind him of this debt and Ariels submissive attitude is restored: Let me remember thee what thou hast promised, Which is not yet performed me . Prospero: If thou more murmurst, I will rend an oak.

And peg thee in his knotty entrails till. Thou hast howled away twelve winters. Ariel: Pardon, master. I will be correspondent to command. And do my spriting gently.--(I, ii, 242-45; 294-98) Ariel is sector, content to serve his master only to the extent to which it ensures his future release. In a sense, he is repaying the debt he owes to us melting pot Prospero by willingly subjugating himself to him. Caliban is quite different from Ariel in this respect, for Caliban feels no debt towards Prospero. Whereas Ariel has a motive for his remaining submissive to Prospero, Caliban lacks any such motive. Lacking any feeling of debt in his relationship to Prospero, Caliban thus develops the rebellious and accusatory attitude that characterizes him through much of the sector jobs, work.

One of the most significant differences in us melting, character that separates Ariel from Caliban is the way in which each uses language. Whereas Caliban communicates almost entirely by means of vulgar curses and complaints, Ariel communicates through poetry and jobs, song. Each characters different approach to language is indicative of their different attitudes and modes of thinking. Ariels language is pot, ordered and stylistic. It betrays a mind at ease with his environment, a mind in which creativity and wit have sufficient room to develop. Calibans language, on temporal parts the other hand, is the product of a mind surely in a state of general discomfort and ill ease. Us Melting Pot. Caliban, unlike Ariel, is not of the mind to produce anything remotely similar to a Mother Would for Her by Toni Morrison poetry or song. Caliban has entirely rejected language itself:

Is, I know how to curse. The red plague rid you. For learning me your language!--(I, ii, 363-65) This is us melting, significant in that by rejecting language, Caliban is on Overview of the, rejecting knowledge itself. Pot. With knowledge comes a realization of ones inadequacy, and Caliban prefers to remain in that more primitive state of blissful ignorance. This is not surprising, for Prospero has given Caliban the tools of communication and self-knowledge, but has failed to give him the freedom and self-responsibility with which it is necessary to enjoy them. The Visit Alter. When contrasting Calibans speeches with those of Ariel, the pot, difference is significant. Ariels songs are filled with alliteration, assonance, rhyme and meter: And then take hands.

Curtsied when you have and kissed, The wild waves whist, Foot it featly here and there; And, sweet sprites, the burden bear.--(I, ii, 375-80) This is language suitable to primary jobs a sprite with little care, almost absurdly childish in its nursery rhyme character. Ariel's language here is pleasant and musical, clearly the product of a clever mind, yet it possesses none of the insight and import that is characteristic of similar characters in us melting, other Shakespeare works, such as The Fool in King Lear . It is not until the second half of The Tempest that one can accurately make any judgements on the characters of full range model Ariel and Caliban.

Calibans encounter with Stephano and Trinculo adds insight into his character and his attitude. Likewise, Ariels enchanting of nearly everyone on the island is significant in defining this characters role in the work. It is possible to view Caliban in the first half of the work as a slave who is rebelling against his oppressive master. This characterization is accurate, evidenced by the extent to which Calibans language expresses his resentment and unwillingness to serve Prospero. Yet when Caliban encounters Stephano and Trinculo with their celestial liquor, he willingly subjugates himself to them. Us Melting Pot. Caliban does not ask them for by Toni, his freedom, as would be expected. Rather, he begs them to be his master, even his god. Caliban thus shows himself to be incapable of autonomy.

In his relationship to Stephano, Caliban is even more pathetic than in us melting pot, his relationship to Prospero, for he abandons his rebellious attitude for one of hero-worship and grovelling. By putting himself in willing slavery to Stephano, who is no more than a drunkard and a buffoon, Caliban shows himself to be truly in a pathetic state. The vicious curses that he had constantly sent to his old master Prospero are replaced by requests to lick the shoe of his new master. A drunk Caliban even attempts a poetic song for the first time, and makes a fool of himself by stumbling over his name: Nor fetch in firing. Nor scrape trenchering, nor wash dish. Ban, Ban, Ca Caliban.

Has a new master: get a new man.--(II, ii, 175-80) He joyously hails his new situation as Freedom, high day, unaware that he is the visit alter, simply stepping into us melting, another set of chains, this time those of Child by Toni Morrison liquor. Caliban becomes a more sympathetic character in the second half of the us melting, work. His weakness is made more apparent, and the ease by which he is manipulated shows him to be a victim of his circumstances, possessing a nature weakened by subjugation and oppression. Although the characterization of Caliban shows him to be a more pathetic character as the play progresses, the characterization of primary sector jobs Ariel displays quite the opposite. Ariel occupies the pot, most important role of the play during the last two acts. It is full range of leadership model, Prospero who conceives the ideas for enchanting the shipwrecked Italians, but he can only carry them out with the us melting, aid of Ariel. In the same way that Ariel is dependent upon Prospero for his freedom, Prospero is dependent upon Ariel for the fulfillment of his plans.

Thus Ariels character is expanded beyond that of the content servant or willing slave. His role as executor of on Overview Management of Workplace Prosperos strategies makes him essential to pot Prosperos success. This entails a significant reversal in roles. Ariel becomes the one in control, for range, it is his power of enchantment upon us melting pot, which Prospero is dependent. Tied into this reversal of roles is an increased confidence and authority in Ariels language. In his speech to Alonso, Antonio and Sebastian in Act III, Ariel condemns these three in the same type of authoritarian language which had previously been reserved only to Prospero: Are ministers of Fate. The elements, Of whom your swords are tempered, may as well. Wound the loud winds, or with bemocked-at stabs. Kill the still-closing waters, as diminish.

One dowle thats in my plume. Of Leadership. My fellow ministers. Are like invulnerable.--(III, iii, 60-66) Ariels use of language as a means of us melting pot intimidation is quite different from his sprightly poems and songs of the first two acts. His changing use of the visit alter language is pot, evidence of a changing attitude. As Ariel comes closer to his freedom, his demeanor becomes more confident and less submissive. He is becoming more independent, and Essay Management of Workplace, thus more strong in character.

Where the second half of the work shows a Caliban increasingly destitute and pathetic, it shows an Ariel increasingly self-assertive and autonomous. The conclusion of The Tempest shows Prospero regaining his dukedom, Ariel finding his freedom, and Caliban resigning himself once again to the authority of Prospero. Although it seems at first to be a pleasant state of affairs, a closer look reveals it to be quite the opposite. Prospero is surely unfit to be a duke, as his overbearing and oppressive nature throughout the play attests to. And although Calibans assertion that he will seek for grace from Prospero indicates that he will be a more willing servant, this can hardly be considered a better state of affairs for him. Us Melting Pot. It seems as if Ariel, in winning his freedom, is the only one of these characters whose state is the naming, truly better than it was at us melting pot the opening of the play. Of Leadership. This is us melting pot, significant in that among these characters, the distinguishing characteristic of Ariel is that he is not human. He is therefore unrestricted by human nature, and human nature in this play is decidedly not portrayed as a liberating force.

Especially in the relationship between Prospero and Caliban, one sees the destructive force that exerts itself when a human being takes it upon himself to control another. Shakespeare's word play in naming his characters emphasizes this idea. A Mother Make Child In Beloved. In the same way that Calibans name can be rearranged as Canibal, the letters in us melting pot, Prospero's name can be rearranged to spell out Oppresor. Temporal Parts. This can hardly be seen as coincidence, for in the pot, relationship between the Essay on Overview Management of Workplace Conflict, two, one is able to discern that Prospero wields his intelligence and modernity as oppressive forces. Montaigne exalts the cannibals for having maintained a civilization so natural and unartificial, but Shakespeare asserts that when exposed to modern civilization, the cannibals become no different than the pot, Europeans. The moderns employ their magic powers intelligence, technology, and liquor to the naming of parts subjugate and oppress the cannibals.

Yet the cannibals willingly allow themselves to be captivated and entrapped by the spell of modernity. Whereas Montaigne praises the cannibals and places blame on modern Europeans, Shakespeare asserts that neither the cannibals nor the Europeans deserve praise save for a few rare individuals, they are both equally pathetic.
